What is the best internet provider in Austin?

If you’re looking for ways to connect in the capital of Texas, Austin has several great choices for people shopping for internet service. AT&T and Spectrum both cover the majority of the downtown area and suburbs with solid speeds, while CenturyLink brings affordable options and fiber speeds to outlying areas. Austin is also a Google Fiber city, and coverage has been expanding rapidly into new neighborhoods over the last year.

For those who have a need for speed,  AT&T offers the fastest speeds with a 5,000 Mbps connection. Google Fiber offers speeds up to 2,000 Mbps. Spectrum speeds can reach up to 1,000 Mbps, which is more than fast enough for almost anything you can throw at it.

Both Spectrum and AT&T cover basically all of the Austin area, so finding an internet plan that works for you should be easy. CenturyLink availability is more limited—mostly in the far northeastern and southern parts of town—but it’s still a good option for people who live in those areas.

DSL:

DSL provides internet service via phone cables and is up to ten times faster than dial-up service.

Cable:

Cable provides internet speeds faster than DSL through the same cables used for cable TV.

Satellite:

Satellite internet is widely available, but offers slower speeds due to a far-traveling signal.

Fiber:

Fiber relies on glass strands to relay digital code and is much faster than both DSL and cable.

Highest-rated internet providers in Austin

Google Fiber is by far the highest-rated internet provider in Austin. It ranked first in nearly every category in our customer satisfaction survey; however, Google Fiber wasn’t included in our report due to its small customer base compared to other national ISPs. T-Mobile also ranked high in the survey, earning the top spots for overall satisfaction, price, and customer service among national providers.

Spectrum received consistently high ratings in every category, especially speed, in which Spectrum scored a 4.0 out of 5.

CenturyLink placed near the bottom in most categories, but it’s worth noting that CenturyLink fiber customers gave great ratings. CenturyLink still provides DSL internet to many of its customers, likely leading to a lower overall score.

Featured customer reviews

AT&T

“The internet service isn’t bad as long as your on a Mobil device playing games or watch videos, or music downloads. But when I try to play online games like the last of us on my PS4 it always lags or tends to lose service especially if I have to use WiFi networking on my PS4 it horrible the service connection is lost about every 3 to 5 minutes, but if I use a lan line to connect into the modem to the PS4 the service isn’t that bad, just every once in awhile it will lag or lose connection.”

–Michael H.

Spectrum

“A young man named Devin at Spectrum came by to put in my internet and cable, and he was a perfect gentleman, polite and respectful! He even offered to help me move my furniture to get the television situated.”

–Joanie C.

CenturyLink

“I live in a rural community and finding stable service was challenging. Century Link was perfect. I have teenagers so needless to say connection is life!”

Terrible inconsistent internet. The internet drops off 100% at random times and is often so slow that we are not able to use it. I moved to Austin 8 months ago. I have to call and complain 2-4 times a month about the same issue. I talked with the neighbors, they have the same complaint. It has been 8 months and Spectrum still has not fixed the problem. When I ask customer service about whether or not anything is being done to fix the issue they never give me a straight answer and we just wait till it goes off again and we call again. If I had another service to go to I would. I would tell anyone that had options to go with someone else to go with anyone but spectrum. I'm tired of spectrum and their inability to deal with the real problem.
